Disciplining when off sick?

We have an employee who is on a final written warning for absences, and who has now been off again twice, (which would normally prompt a disciplinary investigation). He has now gone off long term sick and I wondered if anyone had any experience of dealing with this type of situation? Would you go ahead and invite him in, or wait until he (eventually) returns...?
