Addressing the challenges of an aging workforce - A human capital perspective for firms operating in Asia Pacific |
Many industrialized nations, having built their economies upon a workforce fuelled by one of the largest baby booms in recorded history, are now finding a significant percentage of their workers approaching traditional retirement age. At the same time, many of these countries are facing flat, if not declining, birth rates, which reduces the number of new workers entering their labour force. While many countries around the globe are facing this demographic dilemma, this problem is particularly acute in many of the major nations in the Asia Pacific region.
In this report, we examine the changing demographics within several major countries in the Asia Pacific region and how companies are beginning to tackle various challenges associated with the aging workforce. We also highlight some key questions that executives should be answering to make sure that their organisations are prepared to address these new demographic issues.

Back-office and customer care centres in emerging economies - A human capital perspective |
Thanks to reductions in telecommunications costs and advances in information technology, many companies have expressed a significant interest in relocating a number of business processes to lower wage countries. This interest has fuelled the growth of both captive and outsourced processing and customer contact centres in emerging economies. However, this migration presents both opportunities and unique challenges.
Although firms are attracted to these locations by lower direct labour costs for a variety of back-office positions, establishing and operating back-office and customer care activities in emerging economies poses a unique set of human capital challenges that many companies are not considering as part of their analysis. Each of the key human resources (HR) processes, from identifying candidates to managing turnover, requires a blend of both standardised and localised policies, practices and interventions to help ensure a cost-effective, motivated workforce.
