Six steps to peak performance

Have a vision
What, exactly, are you aiming for? Think about what it will be like when you get there. Don’t let your final goals fade into the background.

Set yourself targets
There’s a lot of work to do, and most of it needs doing very soon. It’s easy to get bogged down in the day-to-day, and not go in any particular direction. But if you’re not heading in any one direction, how can you get anywhere?

Get out of this trap. Decide what you want. Choose a target. Go for a target that you really want, or your energy will soon dry up.

Then, when you plan your days, make sure you include something that will help you towards your target.

Stretch yourself
You can go for an easy life, and stick with things you can do easily. It will save you from some stress, but you need a challenge to stop you getting bored. You will lose out on the sense of achievement when you get it right, and your self-esteem may erode away.

Believe you can do it
If you’re going to stretch yourself, there will be times when the target seems too hard. Remind yourself of what you’ve achieved in the past, and what you can do to achieve your targets in the future. Don’t listen to people who doubt your abilities, especially if that person is you.

Start now
Get started on your target now. There is something you can do today to push you that little bit further.

Enjoy today
It’s hard work going for the peak. Don’t forget the good things about your life today. You can’t live in the future, not yet, so enjoy the now. Don’t brood over the past either. Whatever’s happened, that’s past, and you can’t change it. If it’s bad, put it in a box. If it’s good, incorporate it into your future.

Editor's Welcome

Hello! And welcome back as we enter 2012, with a busy year ahead of us all. With talk of double-dip recessions, a possible partial or even full break-up of the Eurozone and unemployment rates set to hit nearly 9%, topics such as organisational streamlining, staff resilience and talent management are likely to be on many an HR professional's lips over the next 12 months.

But to lighten the gloom here in the UK, we also have the Queen's Diamond Jubilee and its attendant public holidays to look forward to at the start of June. Followed by two weeks of Olympic Games from 27 July to 12 August and the Paralympics from 29 August to 9 September, each generating their own excitement, but also issues to work through for hard-pressed HR departments trying to sort out the multifarious staffing issues in advance.

So with an interesting but challenging year to come, HRZone promises to be with you, supporting you all the way and providing our usual insightful blend of news, analysis, community blogs and expert comment to help you sort the wheat from the chaff. As ever, we love to hear from you too so feel free to either post your words of wisdom to our blog section yourself or, in the case of longer, more in-depth ‘expert voice’ articles, drop me a line with any ideas to cath.everett@siftmedia.co.uk.....
