A wide selection of tips, tricks and guidance can be seen below. HR Zone highly recommends that any tips are taken as a starting point for guidance only.

Question:"Who is the best person for a sick employee to phone in to on the first day of absence?"

HR Tip:
The immediate manager or supervisor would seem to be the best person since he or she knows the employee and can handle the matter on a normal and direct one-to-one basis. The problem is that managers often are not immediately available or, if they are there, may not be able to give the employee full attention and as a result act too subjectively. So it may be better to have sick employees phone in to a central person such as the personnel officer or company secretary, who is perhaps more likely to be available and can take uniform action.
