Your employee has behaved badly by not attending work and not notifying you or giving a valid reason. You should therefore operate your disciplinary procedure by writing to his last known address, inviting him to a disciplinary hearing to deal with his unauthorised absence. If he fails to attend, write again giving a few days notice of another hearing and explaining that, should he fail to attend or make any submission, you will hold the hearing in his absence. If he fails to attend that meeting without giving good reason, you may safely terminate his employment for gross misconduct. Previous HR and Payroll tips: January 2008
