Question:
"Can we impose a complete alcohol ban across our company if, from time-to-time, our directors entertain important customers with wine at lunch?"
HR tip:
You may apply whatever restrictions you like provided you are transparent. In your example you may, for instance, state that consumption of alcohol is strictly forbidden except when served by a director to important visitors. Be clear whether you mean that consumption is banned or that alcohol may not be brought onto the site. People are usually content to see different standards if they are given a sound reason – and provided senior staff in particular abide by the rules.
