Summer holiday begins at work

Over half of workers spend time at work booking their summer holidays.

This is according to research by recruitment website Monster, which carried out a survey last month.

The results show that 32% of workers are carrying out the whole process, from initial research through to booking the trip, whilst in the office, with 24% admitting to spending a 'little bit' of time doing so.

However, according to Julian Acquari, managing director of Monster, UK and Ireland, there is nothing wrong with taking a bit of time out whilst at work:

"Employees are perfectly entitled to spend their lunch time carrying out personal business, in fact recent research has shown that time spent doing non-work related activity on the internet or 'e-breaks' often has an energising effect and boosts productivity. However there is a fine line and employees should ensure they are not spending excessive time using the phone or internet for personal activities."

Hello! And welcome back as we enter 2012, with a busy year ahead of us all. With talk of double-dip recessions, a possible partial or even full break-up of the Eurozone and unemployment rates set to hit nearly 9%, topics such as organisational streamlining, staff resilience and talent management are likely to be on many an HR professional's lips over the next 12 months.
 
But to lighten the gloom here in the UK, we also have the Queen's Diamond Jubilee and its attendant public holidays to look forward to at the start of June. Followed by two weeks of Olympic Games from 27 July to 12 August and the Paralympics from 29 August to 9 September, each generating their own excitement, but also issues to work through for hard-pressed HR departments trying to sort out the multifarious staffing issues in advance.
