Can you recession-proof your career?

I received a press release this week, informing me of a survey that has revealed the UK's most recession-proof job. Can you guess what it is?

Well, let me tell you – it's a plumber. Apparently there are currently over 30,000 unfilled plumbing vacancies in the UK, despite the fact that plumbers can earn in excess of £40,000 a year. However, the organisation that conducted the survey was in fact 'Train 4 Trade Skills', which just happens to train people to become plumbers.

But anyway, it's still an interesting thought - is your career strong enough to weather these turbulent times? If not, how can you make it more secure?

An American business and finance website, Kiplinger.com, suggests making job security one of your main considerations when choosing a job, especially in the current economic climate. It then goes on to suggest five industries to pick from, that will offer such security, no matter what is happening in the economy.

Back here in the UK, financial website Fool.co.uk, published a similar article earlier this year, entitled 'Seven ways to recession-proof your job', which makes interesting reading. It also lists the top 10 recession-proof jobs in the UK – strangely, plumbing doesn't make it onto the list.

A further bit of searching on Google reveals a recruitment website advertising a position as a recruitment consultant in a 'recession-proof sector' (education, in case you were wondering).

Right, I don't know about you, but seeing as I'm not a plumber, and I don't work in any of these listed industries, I'm off to do a bit of 'safeguarding' of my own.

Editor's Welcome

Hello! And welcome back as we enter 2012, with a busy year ahead of us all. With talk of double-dip recessions, a possible partial or even full break-up of the Eurozone and unemployment rates set to hit nearly 9%, topics such as organisational streamlining, staff resilience and talent management are likely to be on many an HR professional's lips over the next 12 months.

But to lighten the gloom here in the UK, we also have the Queen's Diamond Jubilee and its attendant public holidays to look forward to at the start of June. Followed by two weeks of Olympic Games from 27 July to 12 August and the Paralympics from 29 August to 9 September, each generating their own excitement, but also issues to work through for hard-pressed HR departments trying to sort out the multifarious staffing issues in advance.

So with an interesting but challenging year to come, HRZone promises to be with you, supporting you all the way and providing our usual insightful blend of news, analysis, community blogs and expert comment to help you sort the wheat from the chaff. As ever, we love to hear from you too so feel free to either post your words of wisdom to our blog section yourself or, in the case of longer, more in-depth ‘expert voice’ articles, drop me a line with any ideas to cath.everett@siftmedia.co.uk.....
