Unemployment figures hit a 12-year high

  • ONS figures reveal employment levels are the highest since 1997
  • Monster.co.uk Employment Index indicates recruitment activity in some sectors is showing a slight recovery
UK unemployment has hit the highest level since 1996 with the numbers of jobless having risen to 2.261 million in the three months to April, the Office for National Statistics has said. The official figures published today show that the UK employment rate has fallen to 73.3 percent, down 0.8 from the previous quarter and down 1.5 over the year while the UK unemployment rate increased to 7.2 per cent from the previous quarter, up 0.7 over the previous quarter and up 1.9 over the year.
